About BEST: Overview
Building Effective
Successful Teams (BEST) is an innovative approach to professional development
and in-service education. We provide stand-alone, team-directed training
modules on topics such as Teaming, Early and Family Literacy and Challenging
Behaviors for early childhood programs, schools and family service programs. A
version of the Teaming module is also available for middle schools.
The BEST modules have
been developed under a series of federal, regional, state, and local grants and
contracts. Early childhood professionals, teachers, support staff, parents and
administrators collaborated with BEST staff in the creation of materials that
address the strengths and challenges of people working directly with children
and families.
Over 2200 individuals
have subsequently participated in training based on the BEST model. Pre, post,
and follow-up research data gathered over the life of the project years indicate
that teams who complete a BEST module show significant gains in knowledge and
practice. Chapter evaluations and team interviews are regularly used to revise
and strengthen content.
Key advantages of the
BEST model for participating teams include: development of a shared foundation
of knowledge; encouragement of mutual support and collaboration; an emphasis on
practical, readily applied strategies which can be maintained over time; and
removal of time/travel barriers to receiving quality in-service training and
university credit through an on-site delivery system.
