September 25, 2026 By CDHD IdahoSTARS, SESTA complete TPOT-K reliability training Idaho recently had a unique opportunity to take part in pre-publication reliability training on the draft Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool for Kindergarten (TPOT-K). Offered by the University of South Florida, this training provided valuable early access that will help us expand Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), using the Pyramid Model framework, into kindergarten classrooms across Idaho. Through the Expanding Horizons Grant, 11 Idaho professionals undertook the training. This includes five staff members from IdahoSTARS, SESTA and our new Expanding Horizons project. Two representatives from an Idaho school district also completed the training, paving the way to roll out the Pyramid Model in their kindergarten classrooms. All 11 Idaho professionals passed their reliability test on TPOT-K with flying colors. With training complete, coaching support for participating kindergarten teachers will begin this fall. It will start with baseline TPOT-K observations through the Pyramid Model Kindergarten Pilot program funded through Expanding Horizons. TPOT-K focuses on specific needs An effective and knowledgeable workforce is needed to successfully integrate the Pyramid Model framework. Individuals must have the skills to use evidence-based practices that are both developmentally appropriate and responsive to the specific needs of the children and education settings they serve. To assist in building this skilled workforce, Idaho teachers receive training and ongoing coaching to strengthen their practice. Coaching is informed by reliable observers using one of the Pyramid Model practice observation tools. These are highly validated observation instruments that measure how effectively teachers are using the social-emotional practices of the Pyramid Model framework. TPOT-K is the observation tool designed specifically for assessing the use of the Pyramid Model in kindergarten classrooms. Expanding Horizons increases collaboration for kindergarten classrooms Our Expanding Horizons Grant is funding valuable collaboration that’s bringing together the work of IdahoSTARS and SESTA. Historically, kindergarten classrooms have had limited access to PBIS and Pyramid Model tools in Idaho. This will no longer be the case. The two projects are working together to expand early childhood positive behavior intervention and supports in Head Start programs, child care settings and school districts. Over the next three years, both will work together and with the Idaho Department of Education to integrate kindergarten classrooms and increase practice-based coaching capacity across the state. Once the grant is finished, ongoing support for child care programs will be provided through IdahoSTARS, while support for school districts (kindergarten classrooms) will continue through SESTA. Overall, Idaho families can expect more positive learning environments for their children created by skilled educators who have practical, real-world tools to help them reinforce positive behaviors throughout the K12 journey. This includes reduced discipline problems, improved school climates, more academic success, and improved mental health for staff and students.
