What is the Adaptive Climbing Clinic?

The Adaptive Climbing Clinic is a rock climbing event hosted by the Idaho CDHD and supported by University of Idaho climbing wall staff. It is open to all children and youth with disabilities aged 4-18. It is free to enter.

Participants are invited to learn about and try rock climbing with support from CDHD student trainees and climbing wall staff. All supporters are trained and certified in belaying.  No experience is needed. All equipment, including adaptive climbing gear, is provided.

This is a great introductory experience, allowing youth to try the walls. It also provides the chance for families to explore the facility and all the services available. This includes adaptive climbing resources.

What can participants expect?

Once you arrive at the climbing wall at the University of Idaho Student Recreation Center, you will check in with your climber and receive a name tag.

Climbers will be fitted for a harness if they wish. They will then have one hour to explore the area and rock walls. Belayers to manage safety ropes will be available for the taller walls. Participants can also try out the bouldering walls with shorter routes and varying levels of difficulty.

Climbing wall staff will be on hand to offer information, climbing safety and support.

Registration is required to participate. If you have any questions about the Adaptive Climbing Clinic, contact Haley Sprague at 208 885 6094 or haleys@uidaho.edu. You can also find more information about our Healthy Active Lifestyles project online.
