July 16, 2026 By CDHD Gone fishin' with NatureFit Adventures Summers in Idaho are all about the great outdoors. There’s little that locals love more than to get out on the trails, set up camp, or cool down in one of our rivers or lakes. In fact, our NatureFit Adventures program is based on it. This accessible outdoor exploration club provides people with disabilities in the Moscow area the opportunity to experience our landscapes and activities that come with the abundance of nature at our fingertips. Their latest adventure took the group 17 miles outside of Moscow to Spring Valley Reservoir. Eight self-advocates were accompanied by seven CDHD staff and trainees for a morning of fishing. With the help of Idaho Fish and Game’s Fishing Trailer, participants were able to check out fishing equipment for free and cast their lines. Fishing licenses not required during the event. Setting up on one of the reservoir’s large docks, the group tried their luck at catching everything from rainbow trout and largemouth bass to black crappie and bluegill. While only one fish was caught and released, many worms were stolen. “I had a good time on the fishing trip! I like to go to NatureFit Adventures to meet new people and see friends,” said James Peterson, self-advocate and NatureFit participant. “Some of my favorite outings have been going to different farms and helping them out.” The psychological and physical benefits of outdoor recreation are well documented by organizations such as the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability. It can help lower stress, improve mobility, increase confidence and more. NatureFit Adventures is just one of our Healthy Active Lifestyles programs that ensures people with disabilities have equal opportunities to reap those benefits. The program breaks down barriers by planning excursions that are accessible and open to all. Hiking, walking, gardening, games, tours and fishing are all on offer, with new activities planned each week. Staff and CDHD student trainees are always on hand to act as natural supports where needed. NatureFit isn’t just about the great outdoors though, it’s also an opportunity to learn, build life skills and meet new people in a supportive social environment. This year’s fishing trip was one more example of that, bringing together people from across the area for a day of learning about fishing and Idaho’s waterways, while making new friends over bait and a packed lunch.
